FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Department of Public Relations and Communication

Issued: September 10th, 2015

It may seem to be a mystery as to why school systems decided to close 2 hours early yesterday, and for one county Tuesday as well. Maryland School Information reached out to these school systems for an explanation as to why they closed early, we only received an explanation from one of these counties. Baltimore City Public Schools Communications Director gave us this response;

"We make decisions about school closures after careful consideration of a number of factors. Yesterday’s heat, particularly after several days of hot weather with temperatures building in our schools, coupled with the lack of or inadequate air-conditioning in our schools, made conditions potentially unsafe for students, notably those who suffer with asthma or other health-related concerns."

We here at Maryland School Information were surprised at first by the decision but as we look at it now with an explanation, it makes sense to us, the safety of children is the most important. We would like to thank Baltimore City Public Schools Communications Department for the comment on the situation.
